Background
John Hack and Andrew Onley are the Directors of fit2work Pty Ltd (ACN 105826444) and the operators of cycle2city (C2C). They first starting formulating the cycle2city idea back in1992 when they were both frustrated commuter cyclists putting up with inadequate facilities within their workplace. Andrew's office, on a number of occasions, had been described as looking more like a motel room with his clothes and towel hanging everywhere.
It wasn't until 1999 that John and Andrew approached Brisbane City Council with the idea of creating cycle2city. It was an original idea, as they were not aware of a similar type facility anywhere else in the world - a complete and fully serviced end of trip facility for cyclists located in the heart of a capital city.
Brisbane City Council embraced the concept as, even back then, they had identified a lack of good end of trip facilities as a significant impediment to cycling to work. This support was also in line with their philosophy of creating a world class cycle network that would encourage up to 8% of the working population to cycle to work by 2012. (in 2008, Lord mayor Campbell Newman announced a record $100 million would be spent on new bikeways over the next four years, further arguing Brisbane's position as the cycling capital of Australia).
C2C was originally planned to be built within the King George Square car park, but the 2004 announcement of the Inner Northern Busway construction (the King George Square Station on Roma Street) changed that idea and led to the C2C project being reconsidered and then built within a vacant area beside the busway complex. To achieve this, Brisbane City Council, Queensland Transport and Translink agreed to all contribute funding. On completion of the centre in 2008, Brisbane City Council took over the long term lease and put out to tender the management rights. fit2work Pty Ltd (trading as cycle2city) won the tender and has operated C2C since mid June 2008, with Brisbane City Council acting as Landlord and jointly sharing (with fit2work) the intellectual property over design.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the cost of my laundry included in the membership price? No, but we can make it a simple and convenient facility for you to use if you wish.
I'm worried I may have to queue for a shower, especially in the morning? The member to shower ratios were designed to cover busy periods such as the early morning 'rush'. C2C staff believe people would be happy with 5 minutes per shower, which, even allowing for 'people transfer times', would allow over 70% of the men and nearly all the women to be showered within the first hour. As membership 'settles' people will work out the best time to arrive to get ready for their own work situation.
I run into work and am interested in joining. Can I join, and if so, do I get a discount because I don't need a bike park? We sympathize with all you walkers, joggers and skaters out there. You are welcome to join (subject to availability), but our prices are fixed as we have predominantly focused on the cycle commuter for our membership.
When you say 'secure' what do you actually mean? You require smart card access to the facility (provided with membership) which gives you access to secure bike storage in a multi rack system (also watched over by C2C staff and security cameras). Whilst you are still encouraged to lock your bike, we believe C2C membership will foster trust and respect between members. Outside the parking area the facility is divided into male and female bathroom and locker sections, also requiring electronic access. Cards can be activated and deactivated as necessary.
My bike is very expensive. Who is responsible if it is stolen at C2C? Whilst we believe C2C will provide secure parking, we must be clear that a condition of membership is the member acknowledging that storage of the bike, and all other personal property is at their own risk and responsibility.
I like the idea and I would like to join but I am a shift worker / work weekends. What can you do for me? Initially we intend to operate on a weekday basis, however we will consider a 7-day operation further down the track once we have gauged demand from members. Sorry, as we can't do much for you at the moment.
I'd prefer to bring my own clothes in and iron them at C2C. Can I do that? Certainly, there are ironing boards (and irons) in each locker room.
Is my membership transferable to another family member or friend if I cannot use it? Generally no, although this may be considered on a case by case basis.
As a member, can I leave my bike at C2C overnight or longer if I need to? Yes, you simply have to inform a staff member.
I often go out for drinks on a Friday night till late and I need my bike on Saturday. Is their provision to pick up my bike over the weekend? No, not yet. We are open 5 days a week, Monday to Friday between 6.00am and 8.00pm, however we will consider a 7-day operation further down the track once we have gauged demand from members.
What about bike repairs? Can I get my bike fixed at C2C? Yes, we have a full service bike workshop and Troy, our workshop manager, is more than happy to answer any of your bike questions. You can book your bike in for a service or a specific repair. as required. The workshop also has a range of parts and accessories for sale

WHY THE FOREST PHOTOS ON OUR WALLS?
cycle2city is about the greener, more sustainable future we are moving towards. A future where cycling to work steps from a 'fringe' activity to a logical, sensible and supported transport alternative which will ease congestion and pollution woes.
Stopping senseless clearfell logging of Australia's magnificant old growth forests is also part of that sustainable future, and we (the staff of cycle2city), are adding our voices to the growing call to end that logging. The photos that adorn our walls all depict beautiful areas within Tasmania's NE that are currently being logged, or are under immediate threat from logging. For more information click on http://bluetier.org and see exactly whats happening to the magnificant forests of North East Tasmania.
